Information

¡ǝʇɐᗡ ǝɥʇ ǝʌɐS 1th - 10th August 2025
New Starting DATE!!
We made a deal to start HOME MADE already on the 1st of August, so we can have a little party and BBQ together on Friday Evening at Wartburg. Due to the extra cost for the night, we will be happy for small donations to cover the additional rent.
About
The Homemade summercamp is a week that is open for beginners as well as experts and everyone in between interested in exploring ideas in art & technology or creating objects for sound, light or movement. The participants can bring their individual projects or work in groups and get inspired by related topics from all other participants. During this self-organized research week we will do workshops and talks, run experiments, cook & eat together, go hiking and there will also be time for party and relaxing.
See an Overview of 20 Years of Homemade
As 2025 also marks the 20 years anniversary of HOME MADE, this is a great opportunity to bring together more new and old friends to join our summer activities, share and celebrate with us the do-it-yourself (DIY) & do-it-with-others (DIWO). And also a unique opportunity to join double-camp in colaboration with our friends from Bretagne. See more here.

Home Made is a summer camp centered on open-ended research, sharing ideas and skills, and fostering a sense of community in a relaxed, collaborative environment. Organized by the Swiss Mechatronic Art Society, the event emphasizes DIWO (Do It With Others), especially in experimental electronics projects used in sound, light, kinetic art, and music. However, the camp celebrates a diverse array of practices, including Bio-art, Ceramics, Mushroom and wild herb foraging, Hiking, Crystal growing, Hobby horse dressage, Microscopy, Textile art, Fermentation, Metal and woodwork, Model airplane construction and flying, Videography, Comic art, and writing.
The philosophy of the camp is that everyone has something valuable to share and something new to learn, regardless of their background. It’s a space for curiosity, creativity, and connecting with others who love making things. This year’s edition is extra special, as it is the 20th Anniversary of Home Made! We have also secured a larger house than usual (so feel free to share with friends who would be interested to join!), which is also situated on the bodensee – so lots of swimming and water geeking opportunities. Visit and edit our wiki for continous updates on the programme, participants, projects and dreams.
There will also be the collaboration with our friends from Bretagne, who will be hosting the Artlabo Retreat, “a week of creating in and with nature”, June 29 – July 14 2025, on Île de Batz, off the Roscoff coast in France.

Venue

„weit, aber traurig. Dieser Blick beherrscht den Konstanzer Untersee, der nichts ist als eine Erweiterung des Rheines auf überschwemmten Wiesen. Auf der anderen Seite des Sees erblickt man düstere Wälder, Überbleibsel des Schwarzwaldes, und weiße Vögel im Fluge unter grauem Himmel, von eisigen Winden getrieben.“ - François-René de Chateaubriand (1768-1848)
Louisenbergstrasse 20, 8268 Mannenbach-Salenstein or for our friends of OpenStreetMap
For the first time with HOME MADE 2025 we go to the lake! We found a nice location on the banks of Untersee, near Salenstein (TG), and already have reserved the Wartburg for us to spend a week of geeking and celebrating, soldering and swimming. The location consists of two houses, the big one with outdoor terasse and professional kitchen and dining rooms, and many many small rooms for sleeping with 2-4 beds each. The second place "Waldhaus" a few steps down can serve as additional working spaces, music rooms, outdoor barbeque and laboratory.
Finally, we also have a small "private" spot down by the lake for water experimentations and cooling down in the lake, including a port to land your boat!

Participant Info
Who are all the Participants
Please start editing this page linked above to tell us who you are and what you might be interested to work on!
What you should prepare and bring

Important things to bring:
- sleeping bag or other cover to keep you warm
- fitting sheet for the bed (single)
- towel (mbe two?)
- your own power strip (we never have enough) (230V)
- and CH electricity power connector if you come from outside Switzerland
- second pair of underwear (we stay from friday 1. - sunday 10. August, so there are 2 sundays)
Swimming stuffs and lake fun:
Untersee (Lake Constance) contains a lot of (sharp-edged) quagga mussels. I currently do not know the situation at Mannenbach, but at some other places at Lake Constance / Rhine. Bathing shoes recommended.
Project based tools, toys and materials:
This is up to you! We will provide a lot of stuff from the MechArtLab, but always good to bring your own stuff for things you want to work with. Good to label them properly so you can get them back at the end.
Directions
See the map
By Boat
From Schaffhausen, Stein am Rhein, Kreuzlingen, Konstanz (DE) or Radolfzell (DE) you could do a nice boat ride to Mannenbach.
The boats from Schaffhausen to Stein am Rhein are going regularly again, see https://www.urh.ch/fahrplan-sommer.
By Train
There is a train station Mannenbach-Salenstein only 9 Minutes from Kreuzlingen. Trains from Zürich via Schaffhausen or Kreuzlingen using local THURBO train (don't get too excited because of the name... it's not thaaaat fast!). If you come from Germany consider to go via Konstanz, or Singen/Radolfzell and take the boat. From Austria, there is the whole Bodensee for you to travel on...
By Plane or Zeppelin
The nearest airports are Zurich, Basel or Stuttgart.
By Car

There is a parking 50 meters above Wartburg. Please put your car there, only short term for unloading in front of the house.
During Home Made 2024, parking was tight. Since this years anniversary may attract even more participants, here are some alternatives to the 25 parking lots available at the official parking at Wartburg so we can avoid stressful tetris-maneuvers.
At Parking Schloss Arenenberg, there are 168 parking lots, which can be rented for 5 CHF/day (vending machine accepts cash upon arrival). The distance from Parking Schloss Arenenberg to HomeMade2025 is 1.8km or about 25min on foot.
On Foot
From the train / lake: Keep in mind that the Wartburg sits on a steep slope. There is an altitude difference of about 90 meters between the lake and the main house. Walking to the Wartburg's "private beach" is about 1.37 km (ca 18 minutes), along the road and then the path by the railroad. Unfortunately there is no direct way down through the forest...
From Zürich: here's a possible 3 day tour.
Where do we sleep?

We have a great main building with many many small rooms, equiped with a sink each, and 3-4 beds. Total number of beds seems to be 109. Number of participants.... 97 adults plus 15 children. some come only a few days in the beginning or the end of the summercamp. so we should be fine.
See the floorplan File:Wartburg_floorplan.pdf
Can I have a room alone for myself? NO
Let's see how we can fullfil all people's wishes. but with the large number of participants, we might really need all the rooms and mostly full.
Can we have a more quiet/FLINTA room? That would be nice!
Who would like to join: Mara, ...
Can I bring a little sleeping matrace and squeeze into a room? YES
Can I put up a tent? NO and YES (We found some spots!)

Although there are 2 nice grass fields in the area, they are dedicated for outdoor activities and sports, and the owner clarified strictly that we are not allowed to put tents there, and we actively agreed to not do so.
We were visiting Wartbung and looked around for small corners, in the forests, next to Waldhaus or near the parking, where it is possible for those who insist on sleeping in a tent.
Can I sleep in my car / camper / van? YES
Kitchen Lab

As we are expecting up to 100 people this year, it will be a bit more challenging to cook and shop. Thus we need to plan and coordinate in more detail and clarify cleary from the beginning, who will be in charge for the foods on which day, and then self-organize the whole crews that help out with food preparations. The kitchen itself is well equiped for this scale of cooking, see photos below.
As usual we will primarily cook dinner collaboratively in small teams each day for everyone. Rich Breakfast is organized together.
If your children are in need of other dinner times or specialized "wienerli mit nüdeli und ketchup" dishes, please self-organize both shopping and preparations.
In between small snacks and lunch style meals are self-organized by whoever is hungry. To leave the kitchen for the main dinner team, we will organize in the small dinning room a little snacking station, coffee making, toast and sandwich maker, small hot-plates etc. and we are trying to get a dedicated snack fridge to be put there. so it's not disturbing the kitchen crew's processes.
Additionally we have 2 big gas powered BBQ grills outside, that can be used throughout the days for little snacks, sausages, hot sandwiches, grilled haloumis and monster Zucchetti, or other experiments. (please leave the poisinous experiments in other locations)
Kitchen / Cooking responsibles
Please only consider to be the main dinner kitchen responsible if you already have experience in planning menu, shopping and cooking for large groups.
The group of main kitchen responsibles will be introduced and trained in the super nice kitchen after arrival, and also will be the main contacts for questions about how to use the kitchen.

“The Feral Labs Network is a network of temporary dislocated hubs for research in art, technology and communities. It’s members share a common interest in art-science research and contemporary do-it-yourself (DIY) & do-it-with-others (DIWO) communities.“ We are happy to be part of this extensive network across Europe!
See more about all those friends on the website and check their nice publications available on their website: https://ferallabs.net/
Support
Through the project “Archipelago: Art and Science Investigations in Times of Unstable Knowledge”, which received support from Pro Helvetia Synergies Programme, we are now preparing for more intense research activities and support of participation of international guests to combine our two summercamps. This joint programme is a collaboration of SGMK – Swiss Mechatronic Art Society and our main partner the Roscosmoe platform by Art2M / Makery, aswell various other local and international partners.
We also thank the donations from Wikimedia CH, Swiss Association for the advancement of free knowledge supporting Wikipedia, and Migros Genossenschaftsbund Ostschweiz, and the equipment support from UMBO, the coolest music club in Zürich.
