8Bit MixTape The Good Old Times...

Introduction

Since 2013 an international team of geeks from Lifepatch.org (Indonesia) and various groups in Switzerland, dusjagr labs, SGMK, a.n.y.m.a, Gaudi Labs, [1], have developed a series of 8bit MixTapes, sound-codes and homemade circuitboards.

The 8bit MixTape is a very simple sounds & beats generator based on an ATtiny microcontroller, compatible and programmable using the popular Arduino environment. Only a little bit of soldering is needed and you then can start programming your own sounds, noises and 8bit tunes. Generating a sound on an 8bit chip, like the ATtiny, is very easy, you can start with simple square waves and later on go to more interesting algorithmic sounds using the famous one-liners introduced in the demo-scene by viznut.

During the workshop we will introduce the participants into simple programming to generate sound on the ATtiny and show how an Arduino can be used as an ISP-programmer. A selection of different boards is available to make / solder your own 8bit Mix Tape. Furthermore we will also make an 8-Step sequencer to play more complex rythms.

The workshop is perfectly suited for beginners aswell as more experienced programmers, 8bit musicians and lo-fi enthusiasts. Basic arduino programming is appreciated but not needed to be able to participate and make the 8bit MixTape.

Mentors

dusjagr aka Marcjono aka Marc Dusseiller

Dr. Marc R. Dusseiller is a transdisciplinary scholar, lecturer for nanotechnology, cultural facilitator and artist. He works in an integral way to combine science, art and education. He performs DIY (do-it-yourself) workshops in lo-fi electronics and synthesizers, hardware hacking, phyisical computing, nanotech and microscopy. He was co-organizing Dock18, Room for Mediacultures, diy* festival (Zürich, Switzerland), KIBLIX 2011 (Maribor, Slovenia), workshops for artists, schools and children as the former president (2008-12) of the Swiss Mechatronic Art Society, SGMK. In collaboration with Kapelica Gallery, he has started the BioTehna Lab in Ljubljana (2012 – 2013), an open platform for interdisciplinary and artistic research on life sciences. Currently, he is developing means to perform bio- and nanotechnology research and dissemination (Hackteria | Open Source Biological Art) in a DIY fashion in kitchens, ateliers and in developing countries.

Budi ‚Iyok‘ Prakosa

Budi ‚Iyok‘ Prakosa is a self-taught programmer who explored various possibilities in creative programming. He started the project as a Video Jockey (VJ) with the name ‚Manticore‘ in 2009, combines interactive programming with graphical data visualization. He has a background in industrial engineering and has an interest in the field of image and sound processing, video jockey, generative art, machine learning, algorithms, data mining, Artificial Intelligence (AI) and collaboration between science and art. Currently he is working on the development of urbancult.net – an online visual mapping documentation on street art, and lifepatch.org citizen initiatives in the arts, science and technology
