Circuit

Apparently, this circuit has been around the SGMK for quite a while, but its history is uncertain – maybe you can clarify?

The 4053 IC is a "CMOS Triple 2-Channel Analog Multiplexer/Demultiplexer with Logic-Level Conversion".
